Echo is the creation of Christian Levis, Nigel Snowdon, and Raul Noriega. We are not programmers, just three guys from New York looking for a better way to interact on a mobile phone. We think "checking in" is lame. Telling people where you are removes all of the interaction that comes with actually being social. Life is not a passive stream of information, but the product of talking to and engaging with those around you. Part of what makes living in a big city so exciting are the chance encounters you have with people you do not know.
Talking with others is not only fun, but informative. Echo uses location-based chat rooms to capture that experience. Instead of just broadcasting your where you are with a "check in," Echo lets you talk with real people at your location. You can choose whether those are people you know, by creating a private chat and inviting friends, or people you don't know, by creating a public room or joining one already in existence. Search for any topic or interest you like. Echo can then use GPS data to sort the chat rooms by location. Now you can talk to locals with the same interest, right from your phone.
Right now we are raising money to fund the completion of our digital goods store. Click here to
donate. This will not only allow users to purchase
all kinds of "bling" for the app but to play games against each other.
It will also support charitable donations (free of charge) for
those organizations who sign up.
Beyond the store, we plan to make another aspect of the mobile phone more collaborative and interactive with each upgrade. Here are some of our ideas:
You can read about these features, and others, as we get closer to development in the blog. Feel free to leave comments or questions in the meantime.
